3rd Floor Economy | Acrylic on Canvas | 36" x 24" | 2013 | The 3rd Floor is higher than ground level but not a penthouse by any means. Just enough to give you the feeling of progression, but the hopes of rising up to achieve your dream. The intersection of the warm summer-like colours, balanced with the cool refreshing blues, allows the negative white space to weave through the piece without creating emptiness. This work focuses on the abstraction of opportunity, a story of emptiness, and tells a story of the ‘Project Buildings’ which were initially developed for new immigrants to a country. What was supposed to be an opportunity to start a new life quickly was realized to be a systemic means to oppress and contain communities within their own environment. The reference of the ‘3rd Floor’ is a comparison to the cost of units as you move higher in a building. You can get in, but the question is, can you get up and out?
