The following works of art were created as part of the 2024 solo show ‘Resonance - The Gravitropic and Phototropic Experience. Leveraging the phenomenon of Gravitropism and Phototropism, the works challenge the observer’s perspective of public presentations and assumptions of how said presentations arrived at the presentation point.
Gravitropism
A coordinated process of differential growth by a plant in response to gravity pulling on it.
The Gravitropic Experience
The self reflective and deep rooted work, usually unseen by others, which is initiated as a response to a burning desire to evolve one's life.
Phototropism
The growth of an organism in response to a light stimulus.
The Phototropic Experience
The outward demonstration and/or bloomed growth, seen by self and others, which acts as tangible reflection of the light that has been stimulating the work done in private.
|'Come Here' | Acrylic on Wood Panel | 48" x 48" | What is it to reach out to another person and asked him to come to you? Is it because you want to do for them? Is it because you need them to do for you and disguise it offer of support? Form shape this piece is a self reflection on the neediness and codependency of individuals, who may also be the support that another person needs.
|'Where to?' | Acrylic on Wood Panel | 48" x 48" | Us humans, left alone to our own devices, can end up coexisting in a confused matrix. This is an exhaustion state and can continue to spiral if not managed accordingly and effectively within oneself. This piece explores the mental health within Black communities, especially black men who may feel like they are stuck in a vicious circle and alone. Their perceived social placements, contemplations of worth, traumatic conditioned view of self, and battles with self love can exhaust, confuse and disorient him leaving him to turn around and withdraw.
|'Nowhere?' | Acrylic on Wood Panel | 48" x 48" | Simply put, we sometimes feel lost. We sometimes feel alone. We sometimes want to hide, but in reality, there is nothing to cover us when we are in these moments. What do we do? Many of us attempt to control and create a scenario that is comforting, either through vices, justifications, and/or excuses. What if we allowed things to just be? I heard someone say "The hardest thing to do is to do the simple thing". Controlling is emotionally draining. Manipulating is mentally exhausting, but we choose this before allowing things be as they are. I guess choosing to let it be is hard. This work explores the 'being', and not the 'doing' (undoing) of ourselves.
|'The Blooms of Curious Righteousness' | Acrylic on Wood Panel | 48" x 48" | Righteousness does not always have to be a terrible thing if you choose to utilize it as a tool. If you insert curiosity around your expression to share and learn, it can reduce and diminish the righteous path that we set off from. From that point we could experience great growth and an outward flowering of energy similar to a bouquet that blooms, yet was grown from a seed that was deep rooted into dark soils.
|'The Line is not Static' | Acrylic on Wood Panel | 40" x 80" | When we use the line as a indicator, a.k.a. a baseline to where we are oriented to, we can flow above and below it at any point in time. It’s important not to condemn ourselves for not being able to be above the line in a healthy way because, as life flows so do our emotions, our thoughts, and our approaches. We adjust we adapt, and we grow, and therefore nothing is static.
|'The Suggestive Opinion of the Anchored Ego' | Acrylic on Wood Panel | 48" x 48" | Sometimes we don’t know when we are anchored to what we believe is only our opinion, but in reality it’s our ego in the way. Really, when we are pushing our point of view, it’s truly just a suggestion, but depending on the receivers ego, it can be misunderstood as righteousness because it’s anchored to our egos at the same time. Everyone is guilty, no one is to blame.
